Uniform quotes and specifications are full of fabric jargon, and it's hard to compare options when you're unsure what the terms mean. This plain-language glossary covers the fabric terms uniform buyers most often encounter, so you can read a spec with confidence.
GSM (grams per square metre)
The weight of the fabric per square metre. Higher GSM = heavier, more durable; lower GSM = lighter, more breathable. Match it to use and climate. Full explainer: what is GSM.
Cotton
A natural fibre — breathable, soft and comfortable, especially in heat. Can shrink, wrinkle and fade more than blends. See cotton vs poly-cotton.
Polyester
A synthetic fibre — durable, colour-retentive, shrink- and wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying. Less breathable than cotton on its own; usually blended.
Poly-cotton
A blend of polyester and cotton (e.g. 65/35) that balances comfort and durability. The workhorse fabric of bulk uniforms.
Twill
A weave with a diagonal rib pattern, known for durability and a smooth surface. Common in trousers, coveralls and workwear for its toughness.
Weave
How threads are interlaced (plain, twill, etc.). The weave affects durability, texture and appearance, independent of the fibre.
Colour-fastness
How well a fabric resists fading from washing and light. High colour-fastness keeps uniforms looking new and is essential for colour-coded schemes (see colour coding).
Shrinkage
How much a fabric reduces in size after washing. Quality fabrics and finishes minimise shrinkage, protecting fit over time. Always check via a wash test on the sample.
Breathability
How well a fabric allows air and moisture through — important for comfort in heat and for active or long-shift roles.
Blend ratio
The proportion of each fibre (e.g. 65% polyester / 35% cotton). It shifts the balance between durability (more polyester) and comfort (more cotton).
Finish
Treatments applied to fabric — for example wrinkle-resistance, stain-resistance or softening. Finishes can improve performance but vary in durability through washing.
Reflective / retroreflective
Material (usually tape) that reflects light back to its source, used on high-visibility workwear for safety. See reflective workwear standards.
How to use this glossary
When comparing quotes, check the fibre, blend ratio, weave and GSM — not just "poly-cotton shirt." Two quotes with the same fabric name can differ a lot in weight and quality. When in doubt, feel a sample. For the bigger picture, see choosing fabric.
