Industrial workwear has the hardest job of any uniform. It must survive heat, oil, abrasion and constant washing, keep workers safe and visible, and still carry your branding. For a factory or plant buying in bulk, here is how to choose industrial uniforms and safety workwear that last and protect.
The main types of industrial workwear
Coveralls / boiler suits: full-body protection for machine operators, maintenance and field staff — see industrial uniforms.
Reflective / high-visibility wear: for work near traffic, cranes or moving vehicles — covered in our reflective workwear standards guide.
Security and staff uniforms: for guards and support staff — see safety wear.
Two-piece work sets: shirt-and-trouser combinations for lighter-duty roles.
Fabric: built for the shop floor
Industrial fabric prioritises durability over softness. Look for heavier, tightly-woven fabrics that resist abrasion and repeated industrial washing without thinning. The right weight (GSM) depends on the work — heavier for heavy industry, lighter where heat is the bigger issue. For high-heat or spark-exposed environments, specialised flame-resistant fabrics may be required; confirm the standard your site needs.
Safety first: match workwear to the hazard
Workwear is part of safety, not just identity. Assess the hazards on each role — moving vehicles (reflective/hi-vis), abrasion (durable coveralls), heat or sparks (appropriate fabric) — and specify accordingly. Your safety officer should confirm the standards and classes required; our hi-vis guide explains visibility classes.
Durability and total cost
Industrial uniforms take the most punishment, so durability directly affects cost. A cheap coverall that wears through in months is more expensive than a tougher one that lasts — see the true cost of cheap uniforms. Reinforced stitching at stress points and quality fabric pay back over the life of the garment.
Branding and identification
Industrial uniforms often carry the company logo, and sometimes department colour coding or name patches for identification and access control. Embroidery or durable patches survive industrial washing better than basic prints. On reflective garments, place branding so it does not reduce the certified visible area.
Sizing for a diverse workforce
Plant teams span a wide size range and roles. Order a full size set with a size-wise split and a buffer for new joiners — see our sizing guide. Coveralls in particular need correct fit for both safety and comfort.
Plan capacity and reorders
Large plants order in volume and reorder as staff change and uniforms wear out. Choose a manufacturer with the capacity for your volume and who keeps your specification on file for consistent reorders — see how to choose a manufacturer.
