Before colour, before logo, before price — the fabric is the decision that determines how a uniform feels to wear, how long it lasts, and how it holds up to washing. For bulk orders, the two most common choices in India are cotton and poly-cotton. Here is how they compare and which suits which industry.
Cotton
Cotton is a natural fibre prized for comfort and breathability. It feels soft, absorbs moisture, and is comfortable in heat — a real advantage in much of India.
Strengths: breathable, comfortable, natural feel, good for sensitive skin.
Trade-offs: can shrink, wrinkle and fade faster, and may wear quicker under heavy industrial washing. Usually costs more than blends for the same weight.
Poly-cotton (blended)
Poly-cotton blends polyester with cotton (common ratios are 65/35 or similar) to combine the best of both. It is the workhorse fabric of bulk uniforms.
Strengths: durable, holds colour well, resists shrinking and wrinkling, dries faster, and is cost-effective at volume — important when you order hundreds of pieces.
Trade-offs: slightly less breathable than pure cotton, though good blends and weights minimise this.
Side-by-side
Comfort/breathability: cotton leads. Durability through repeated washing: poly-cotton leads. Colour retention: poly-cotton. Shrink/wrinkle resistance: poly-cotton. Cost at scale: poly-cotton usually lower. Natural feel: cotton.
Don't forget GSM (fabric weight)
Within either fabric, weight (grams per square metre) matters. Heavier fabric is more durable but warmer; lighter is cooler but less hard-wearing. Match GSM to use — lighter for summer-heavy regions and desk roles, heavier for industrial and outdoor wear.
Recommendations by industry
Hospitals: poly-cotton for scrubs and lab coats — it survives frequent hot-washing and holds colour for coding. See our hospital uniform ordering guide.
Schools: durable poly-cotton blends for daily wear by children, where colour-fastness and shrink-resistance reduce reorders.
Hotels & chefs: a balance — comfortable yet smart blends for front-of-house; durable, often heavier fabrics for kitchens.
Industrial/factory: durable, heavier work fabrics for coveralls and safety wear, where toughness outweighs softness.
Corporate: comfort and appearance matter most — quality cotton or premium blends for shirts and polos.
The practical answer
For most bulk uniform programs, a quality poly-cotton blend at the right GSM gives the best balance of comfort, durability and cost. Pure cotton is worth the premium where comfort and a natural feel are the priority. The best step is to feel a sample in the actual fabric and weight before you commit — a good manufacturer will arrange one.
